A Mini Mystery
NYPD detectives Luc Moncrief and K. Burke are trying to
figure out why beautiful young New York women are dropping dead. Autopsies
reveal nothing. The only thing they seem to have in common is a nanny placement
service. When a fourth young woman with no children dies—they are really
baffled. In their off-time, Luc and K. Burke manage to see the
Kentucky Derby. He is friends with one of the owners of a horse in the race.
When the horse wins, another deadly mystery begins. French Twist by James
Patterson and Rich DiLallo is a quick read from the new Bookshots collection. It's a great pick for busy people. DB

Being kicked out of the nest.
Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney has written a funny and compassionate novel titled The Nest. The story of four middle aged siblings and their trust fund. The trust, which was intended by their father to be a modest help has ballooned into serious money, helped by the stock market. All the siblings desperately and secretly need the money, which unfortunately has been used by Leo, the oldest to pay off a waitress he injured while driving drunk. Although all the siblings are fallible, secretive and have all the unlikeable traits most humans do, the lovely thing about this novel is we like them anyway. How does this group of middle-aged New Yorkers work it all out? That is the charm of the novel. Read it and see! ML

A Fatal Fungi
What would you do if you found a fluorescent mushroom
growing in your closet? Call a fumigator or a mold expert? That’s exactly what
twins Edith and Kat did when they found one growing in their New York brownstone.
Edith also tried to reach landlord/actress Vida Cebu. After being advised to
pour bleach on the mysterious growth, the twins think they’re safe. Unfortunately
that’s not the case and soon there are mushrooms growing in many buildings in
the neighborhood. To find out what happens to Edith, Kat and a host of wacky
neighbors pick up Act of God by Jill Ciment. It is short, entertaining
perhaps somewhat prophetic story. DB
