Fast and Delicious

Christopher Kimball has done a lot of cooking. He started cooking magazines and starred in a cooking show on public television. His new venture (after a messy divorce from his old company) is Milk Street Kitchen with a TV show and cookbooks. His new book is Milk Street Cooking: Tuesday Nights. This book emphasizes fast cooking, weeknight cooking and using spices for flavor. So the first chapter is titled Fast, and the next Faster. There are chapters for Pizza night, One Pot, and Supper Salads. While the choice of dishes are semi-traditional, the spices and combinations are not. Some of the dishes are for example, Braised Chickpeas and Spinach, Shrimp with Tamarind. Sweets are also included,(Raspberry-Pistachio Meringue anyone?) Delicious! ML

Southern Hospitality

Nestled in the foothills just outside of Nashville, Tennessee, The Loveless Café is an iconic destination in and of itself. It genuinely pays homage to true Americana. When a colleague of mine brought this book to my attention, I knew we would need to add it to our Library’s collection. The true Southern charm of this quaint and busy café is well worth the 30 minute drive from downtown; not to mention, the food and service is among some of the best Southern hospitality you could ever ask for. The recipes are quite practical, yet so delicious—then again, when you add Tennessee whiskey, cinnamon sticks, vanilla bean, butter, sugar, and heavy cream together, what wouldn’t be good, right? (Drunken Caramel Sauce, p. 206).

I personally own a copy of Southern Country Cooking from the Loveless Café: Hot biscuits, country ham. However, my collection just wouldn’t be complete without this book being added to my kitchen arsenal (don’t worry, I am not going to keep the Library’s copy, I will buy my own). If ever you venture to Nashville, a visit to the Loveless Café is a definite must, but as the book states, “now anyone who can’t travel to Nashville or wait two hours for a table can have a taste of the Loveless at home!”--BC

Cheese, Please!

Who doesn't love cheese? So many flavors, forms, textures, uses! We've just added two new books on the subject to the collection: Cheese Making and World Cheese Book. Here you get the whole spectrum: cheeses you can make in your own kitchen to be self-sufficient and a comprehensive guide to global varieties. That's a lot of cheese!

Make Preserves, Jams, Pickles and Cordials This Summer

Get your jam pot ready. The River Cottage Preserves Handbook by Pam Corbin will inspire you to pick and preserve the season's bounty. I especially liked the recipe for red currant jelly and sweet cucumber pickle but there are many others to choose from. The photos are gorgeous! This cookbook was originally published in Great Britain but this edition was edited for U.S. publication.

Tiny Treats

Petite Sweets has recipes to delight even the biggest dessert fans. The bite-size treats range in difficulty and ingredients--I have a hard time choosing which one I'll try first! I'm leaning toward the chilled ones, like the White Chocolate Mousse, but I could be persuaded to start with a Chocolate Hazelnut Eclair...
