Could You Be This Brave?

Most of us have read WWII fiction, and here's another!  The Baker's Secret is a well-written, easy to read book about a brave and determined 22-year-old woman.  In a small German-occupied village in France just before D-Day, the local Jewish baker is taken away.  The German army needs bread and Emma was the baker's apprentice.  A small resistance team is created when Emma figures out a way to distribute needed food (and hope!) to villagers while living in a home occupied by a German officer. 
Strong characters and wonderful descriptions of the countryside, the smells of bread and the villagers. This story made me think about what I would do in Emma's situation and if I could be this brave?? SW

Guest Blogger - Star Kennedy

Looking for Me by Beth Hoffman is a novel about Teddi Overman.  It takes place in Kentucky and Charleston, S.C.  The book is about Teddi's life and her love of restoring furniture.  It is also about her family and a tragedy that takes place in her 20's.  The book is written with many flashbacks.  I really enjoyed this quick, easy read.  It was a heartwarming story.  I also really liked the message - Never lose hope! It's About Time

Mitch Albom moves in a new direction with his latest book The Time Keeper. He tells the story of Father Time. past present and future. Dor, an ancient man, is interested in the cycles of the moon. He starts to keep track of days, nights, seasons and eventually moments.  His whole life is devoted to measuring time. He is exiled from his family and moves into the desert with his wife Alli. When he loses his beloved Alli, he climbs the Tower of Babel to demand that the gods restore her life. As punishment he is forced to spend centuries in a cave listening to mankind bemoan the lack of time. Finally he is thrust into the modern-day world to help two individuals with their all consuming  problems. This is a curious book that combines some timeless story lines. DB

Livin' in the D!

Say Nice Things about Detroit by Scott Lasser is a story about coming home. When David Halpert returns to the metro area to help care for his aging mother he is confronted with the death of a former girlfriend, Natalie and her half-brother, Dirk. In paying his respects to the family of the deceased he is re-introduced to Natalie’s younger sister and the twists and turns of life begin. For those who know the Motor City, many of the places mentioned will resurrect nostalgic memories. Hope is interwoven with the desperate plight of the city and its inhabitants. As the characters heal and grow they offer the reader much hope for the future. DB
