Walking to the Ocean

What happens when an 83 year-old woman decides to walk across Canada to see the ocean? somewhat interesting adventures—that’s for sure.  Etta and Otto and Russell and James by Emma Hooper deals with a journey, both physical and reminiscent, by three elders whose lives are intertwined. Etta, Otto, and James live in Saskatchewan. They have lived through WWII and the Great Depression. Each one of them have a story to tell and a longing to fulfill one last desire. Then there is James. There is definitely something magical about James. The story unfolds in letter and narration format and jumps from present day to past memories. It definitely arouses the reader's interest. DB

Only a Promise

Only a Promise is Book 5 in the Survivors' Club series by Mary Balogh. It can definitely be read as a stand alone book, but you will more than likely want to read all the series once you finish this one. The story revolves around two main characters. Ralph Stockwood the Earl of Berwick, and Chloe Muirhead, a woman who fled to the country to stay as a companion to the Duchess of Worthingham, her mother's God mother, and her late grandmother's dear friend. She also happens to be the Grandmother of Ralph Stockwood.

This book was a joy to read, it was fast paced, it was emotional, and I really felt empathy for the characters, not just the main ones, but all of them. There is much more to this than just Chloe and Ralph's story.

I can't find any flaws in this book, it was written well, and it held me captive from the beginning to end. If you enjoy marriage of convenience stories, then you will love this one. *JK*

Lots of good viewing!

Want to be transported to the court of Henry VIII? How about viewing the greatest archeological find ever. Maybe cop shows are your thing, and if those cops are smart gritty English women, so much the better! We have a new batch of great dvds, ready for you to view. The non fiction offerings are:

The Sixties, a three dvd set exploring the explosive decade many are still here to remember. Vietnam, the civil rights movement, the start of the hippie era, and so much more.

The Emperor's Ghost Army, about the fabulous find in China, a complete terra-cotta army, 8000 strong with terra-cotta horses and weapons, buried for hundred of years. Who created these warriors and why?

We have three eras of British history, fictionalized. First is the dramatization of one aspect of the court of Henry VIII, Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall, focusing on Henry's councilor Thomas Cromwell. Award winning!

Call the Midwife is a series taken from Jennifer Worth's memoir, who, was just twenty-two when she volunteered to spend her early years of midwifery training in London's East End in the 1950s. Coming from a sheltered background there were tough lessons to be learned. The conditions in which many women gave birth just half a century ago were horrifying. This series is so popular there have been four seasons so far.

ScottBailey is a thrilling investigative drama series exploring the personal and professional lives of two female detectives. Despite their differences, impulsive, funny and single Rachel and reflective, married mother-of-two Janet, have a great partnership. Thrown together in the toughest of murder cases, they have become the best of friends, ready to support each other both in and away from the incident room. Each episode sees Rachel and Janet face a serious crime that is both challenging and emotionally difficult, whilst coping with their complex personal lives. ML

Suddenly One Summer

Suddenly One Summer is a new story by Julie James. In this story, Victoria Slade is a successful divorce attorney and has definite commitment issues and she's jumped to the wrong conclusion about her new neighbor Ford Dixon. Ford is an investigative reporter and doesn't like the assumptions she's made about him and goes out of his way to antagonize her. I really enjoyed reading about Victoria and Ford's romance. They have a love/hate relationship, but it was clear to see where each of them were coming from, and when things started moving along, they had a really nice flow. I felt like everything just fell into place naturally. *JK*
