A Fatal Fungi

What would you do if you found a fluorescent mushroom growing in your closet? Call a fumigator or a mold expert? That’s exactly what twins Edith and Kat did when they found one growing in their New York brownstone. Edith also tried to reach landlord/actress Vida Cebu. After being advised to pour bleach on the mysterious growth, the twins think they’re safe. Unfortunately that’s not the case and soon there are mushrooms growing in many buildings in the neighborhood. To find out what happens to Edith, Kat and a host of wacky neighbors pick up Act of God by Jill Ciment. It is short, entertaining perhaps somewhat prophetic story. DB

Kilts and Daggers

Kilts and Daggers is the very first book I read from Victoria Roberts. Although this is the second book in the Highland Spies series, it was still great to read on its own. It is set in the Highlands of Scotland and with danger, mystery and of course a stunning romance, it will keep any historical romance reader happy. There are two main characters in this story. Grace yearned for adventure, ever since she found out that her uncle and sister are spies for the King. Grace is determined to become a spy on her own when she returns back to England. Fagan is a Highland captain, and was asked to escort Grace to England. Grace is sassy and strong willed, and Fagan is the barbaric Scotsman. If you like books set in historical Scotland, you don't want to miss this! *JK*

The latest from Bruno

In Martin Walker's latest Bruno, Chief of Police novel, terrorism takes the stage. Although this series is ostensibly mysteries, it is also about life in France, in a small town. Bruno although a police chief, has to navigate political complexities and loves to cook. There are mouth watering descriptions of food and a deep appreciation of wine. There are several novels in the Bruno series, but they also can be read as a stand alone. In this latest of the series, The Children Return, Bruno Courrèges, the St. Denis a police chief, is sickened by the burnt, tortured corpse he discovers and later identifies as Rafiq, an undercover operative investigating extremist infiltration at a nearby mosque. Soon afterward, Bruno learns that local youth Sami Belloumi, an autistic savant, is being transported home from Afghanistan, where he has been forced by jihadists (whom he met through the mosque's school) to engineer lethal terrorist bombs. Sami's return puts St. Denis in the middle of a media firestorm; experts converge to determine his legal treatment even as Rafiq's killers try to silence Sami and Bruno. Exciting! ML

Michigan Monuments

When America fought its bloodiest war, Michigan sent over 90,000 troops. The First Michigan was the first western regiment to respond to Abraham Lincoln’s call for troops, leading to his famous exclamation “Thank God for Michigan!” History buffs will be delighted with Michigan Civil War Landmarks by David Ingall & Karin Risko. With over 70 monuments in the lower peninsula alone, there is probably one close enough to visit this week. If you are the least bit curious about Michigan’s role in the War Between the States take a look at this book soon! DB

The Unlikely Lady

http://tlnl.ent.sirsi.net/client/en_US/oxfd/search/detailnonmodal/ent:$002f$002fSD_ILS$002f0$002fSD_ILS:1953278/one?qu=9781250042095&dt=list
The Unlikely Lady is another witty, clever, and fun book in the Playful Brides series. I think Valerie Bowman did an excellent job with the characters and plot. You will fall in love with Garrett and Jane. Jane loves to read books and she has no desire to marry and Lord Garrett is a bachelor who enjoys life. Jane and Garrett's arguments are so fun and the chemistry between them is great. This is a delightful and enjoyable read with great characters.

This book is third in the series and can be read without the first and second, but I recommend the entire series. *JK*
